STILLWATER COUNTY, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to announce and invite the public to comment on a proposal to resurface about 13 miles of Secondary Highway 302 (S 302) east of Molt and about 7 miles of Secondary Highway S 306 (S 306) south of Rapelje. The project begins on S 302 near Diamond X Park, 4 miles northwest of Billings, and extends west to Molt. The project on S 306 begins approximately 18 miles north of Columbus at Battle Butte Road and extends north, ending at the intersection with Molt-Rapelje Road.

Proposed work includes applying a seal and cover (chip seal), replacing existing guardrail along S 306 and applying new pavement markings. In addition, the project will re-grade the intersection of S 302 and Coles Road, as well as a portion of Eastlick Road. The purpose of the project is to extend the life of the existing asphalt surface and improve truck turning movements.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2027 depending on completion of design and availability of funds. No new right-of-way or utility relocations are anticipated.

Partnering with the community is an important part of properly planning for future projects. MDT welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project. Comments may be submitted online at mdt.mt.gov/contact/comment-form.aspx or in writing to Montana Department of Transportation, Billings office, PO Box 20437, Billings, MT 59104-0437. Please note that comments are for project UPN 10476000.

The public is encouraged to contact Billings District Preconstruction Engineer Kurtis Schnieber at 406-657-0269 or Project Design Engineer Jacob Brotzler at 406-657-0266 with questions or comments about the project.
