HELENA, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to announce and invite the public to comment on a proposal to upgrade the pedestrian crossings on Last Chance Gulch and South Montana Avenue in Helena. On Last Chance Gulch, work will begin just south of the pedestrian crossing between Centennial and Memorial Parks and ends just north of the crossing. The project area on South Montana Avenue begins near the intersection with 11th Avenue, and extends south, ending near the intersection with East Broadway Street.

Proposed work includes installing rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) and sidewalk curb ramp improvements at key crossings in both locations. Installation of raised medians are proposed on South Montana Avenue. New pavement markings and signage will also be included at both locations. The purpose of the project is to enhance safety, improve pedestrian accessibility, and address vehicle-pedestrian related crashes/conflicts.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2026 depending on completion of design and availability of funds. No new right-of-way or utility relocations will be needed.

Partnering with the community is an important part of properly planning for future projects. MDT welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project. Comments may be submitted online at mdt.mt.gov/contact/comment-form.aspx or in writing to Montana Department of Transportation, Great Falls office, PO Box 1359, Great Falls, MT 59403-1359. Please note that comments are for project UPN 10356000.

The public is encouraged to contact Great Falls District Preconstruction Engineer Jim Combs at 406-788-2773 or Project Engineer David Relph at 406-444-1280 with questions or comments about the project.
