FORSYTH, Mont. - The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Frontier West, Robert Peccia & Associates, and Morrison-Maierle, is beginning work to replace 14 aging timber bridges on U.S. Highway 12 between Forsyth and Ingomar.

The project will enhance long-term safety and accessibility by constructing two new bridges and installing 12 reinforced concrete culverts. These upgrades will eliminate weight restrictions, improve safety features, and ensure uninterrupted access for emergency vehicles, agricultural operations, and community events.

“These structures were built many decades ago and are nearing the end of their serviceable life,” said MDT Project Manager Jeremy Schneidt. “This project is about more than replacing bridges—it’s about investing in long-term safety and reliability for our communities and the travelers who rely on this corridor every day.”

Starting in April 2025, construction will proceed in phases over approximately 2.5 years. The first three bridges under construction will be the drainage ditch just west of Ingomar (Bridge ID 5496) at mile marker 229, the drainage ditch 2 miles northwest of West Blacktail Road (Bridge ID 5497) at mile marker 236, and the stockpass 90 yards east of Swanson Lane (Bridge ID 5508) at mile marker 257.

Then, in July, crews will begin work on the drainage ditch 1 mile southeast of Vananda (Bridge ID 5506) at mile marker 253, the stockpass 2 miles east of Vananda (Bridge ID 5507) at mile marker 255, and the stockpass 3/4 mile south of Big Porcupine Creek Road (Bridge ID 5512) at mile marker 249.

The remaining eight bridges are scheduled for construction in 2026.

Traffic control measures will include:

  • Temporary detours (shoofly routes) at select locations
  • Single-lane closures with flaggers or traffic signals
  • Occasional width restrictions (as narrow as 12 feet for short durations)
  • Ongoing access for school buses, EMS, and large agricultural equipment

MDT will work closely with emergency services, school districts, and local leaders to minimize disruption and maintain safe and efficient travel during construction. Travelers are encouraged to allow extra time, follow all posted signs, and drive cautiously through work zones.
