MISSOULA, Mont. - The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), Poteet Construction, and Frank Gurney, Inc., will resume installing high-tension cable rail along Interstate 90 (I-90) in the Missoula area starting in mid-April. The project team expects work to begin near the Quartz Flats area, from mile marker 55 to 58, and the Clinton area near mile marker 120 and continue toward mile marker 133.

“High-tension cable rail has proven to be very successful in stopping traffic from crossing over the median and preventing head-on collisions,” Bob Vosen, MDT Missoula District Administrator, said. “This is an important safety improvement project for Montana roadways and supports MDT’s Vision Zero goal.”

Motorists should expect intermittent single-lane closures and reduced speeds when driving through active work zones. Crews will be on-site Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and occasionally on Saturdays, as needed.

Construction is anticipated to be completed by the end of the 2026 construction season, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting.

This stage is part of a four-phase road safety improvement project that will install, or has installed, high-tension cable rail across 150 miles of interstate, including sections of I-90 in the Missoula, Butte, and Bozeman areas and Interstate 15 (I-15) in the Butte and Helena areas.

Weekly updates will be available during construction. For more information, please visit the webpage at www.mdt.mt.gov/pubinvolve/mtmcr/.
