JORDAN, Mont. - The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and contractor Prince, Inc. will soon begin work on the West of Jordan project. This project will improve nearly 9 miles of Montana Highway 200 (MT 200), starting 12 miles east of Sand Springs (mile marker 192.2) and ending 12 miles west of Jordan (mile marker 201).

“MT 200 is an important east-west route through the center of Montana that was built in the early to mid-1900s and needs to be brought up to a more current design standard improving travel for not only the larger commercial vehicles we see today but for all users of our highway,” said Shane Mintz, MDT Glendive District Administrator. “Making the highway more efficient and enhancing safety features for all users is a priority for MDT.”

Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2025 and be completed in 2026. This schedule is subject to change due to contractor availability, weather, and other unforeseen factors.

Improvements include widening the highway to feature 12-foot travel lanes and five-foot shoulders, resurfacing the roadway, adding rumble strips, installing additional signage, and updating pavement markings. This phase also involves improving the Big Dry Creek Bridge, including repairing the bridge deck and upgrading the guardrail.

Prince, Inc. was selected as the primary contractor for the project and has worked on other MT 200 improvement projects in recent years.

“Prince, Inc. is honored to partner with MDT on the West of Jordan project to enhance this important transportation corridor,” said Mike Sharp, Superintendent for Prince, Inc. “Our team is committed to delivering a more efficient and reliable roadway for Montana’s residents, businesses, and travelers, and we look forward to bringing our experience and expertise to this important improvement effort.”

Travelers in the region will also be impacted by the Flowing Wells East & West project, which is currently under construction. This project will rebuild just less than 7 miles of MT 200, starting about 2 miles west of the Flowing Wells Rest Area and extending east, crossing

the intersection of MT 200 with Montana Highway 24 (MT 24). This project is the third phase of the five-phase Highway 200 Jordan to Brockway project, which will reconstruct 37 miles of MT 200 east of Jordan. For more information, visit mdt.mt.gov/pubinvolve/hwy200jordan/.

Travelers can expect traffic control, lane reconfigurations, and reduced speeds when traveling through the project areas. There may be short delays of up to 15 minutes. Efforts will be made to maintain two-lane traffic as much as possible. However, one-lane traffic controlled by pilot vehicles and/or flaggers may be necessary for some construction activities to ensure safety and mobility in the work zone.

Regular project updates will be provided throughout construction. National Work Zone Awareness Week April 21-25, 2025 | nwzaw.org Respect the zone, so we all get home. In 2023, 282 work zone crashes occurred in Montana. This construction season, MDT urges Montana drivers and visitors to use extra caution while traveling through work zones by paying attention and following posted signage. Our families thank you.
