WHITEFISH, Mont. - The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) plans to start work on the US 93 West of Whitefish project this spring, depending on weather and other unforeseen factors. This road reconstruction project will occur on U.S. Highway 93 (US 93) in Whitefish, starting near the intersection with Mountainside Drive and extending approximately 3 miles west to just past Livermore Flats.

“This will enhance roadway safety while also improving accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists in Whitefish,” said Bob Vosen, MDT Missoula District Administrator. “By extending the service life of this section of US 93, we are ensuring it continues to serve the community for years to come. Please attend the open house to learn more about the construction process, meet our project team, and ask questions.”

The in-person event will be held at the Whitefish City Council Chambers at 418 E 2nd Street on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m. No formal presentation will be made; all are welcome to stop by any time during the event. Plans and informational display boards will be available, and the project team will be onsite to answer questions.

Planned safety enhancements for the US 93 West of Whitefish project include a new driving surface, designated turn lanes, guardrail, wider shoulders, new signage, and a separated shared-use path with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant handrails and detectable warning devices.

Once construction begins, travelers can expect traffic control, lane reconfigurations, and reduced speeds through the project area. There may be short delays of up to 15 minutes. Efforts will be made to maintain two-lane traffic as much as possible. However, one-lane traffic controlled by pilot vehicles and/or flaggers may be necessary for some construction activities to ensure safety and mobility in the work zone.

During construction, updates will be distributed weekly via email, webpage, and text message.
