WHITEHALL, Mont. - The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Helena Sand and Gravel, is beginning the Whitehall Urban Pavement Preservation project, extending the service life of Montana Highway 55 (MT 55) through downtown Whitehall. Also known as West Legion Avenue and North Whitehall Street, the project area runs from the intersection with US Highway 2 (US 2) east and north to the Interstate 90 (I-90) interchange.
MDT crews will mill and overlay the entire width of the roadway with new asphalt. The project also includes replacing curbs and gutters, installing two Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant curb ramps at the intersection of Legion Avenue and Brooks Street, constructing new sidewalk segments throughout the project area, and updating pedestrian, school zone, and roadway signage.
“Projects like this are an investment in transportation infrastructure and ensuring the safety of everyone who uses our roadways, whether walking, driving, or biking,” said Scott Cunningham, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “We’re committed to minimizing disruption and completing this work as efficiently as possible.”
Construction will begin in mid-May with work on pedestrian facilities. Traffic control will be in place beginning in early June and last for approximately eight weeks. All work will pause for Frontier Days, held July 24 through 26. MDT will restore normal traffic patterns and clear equipment from the roadway by 3 p.m. on July 24.
Drivers should expect single-lane daytime closures and the presence of flaggers. Lane widths will be reduced in active work zones, and speed limits will be temporarily lowered. Sidewalk and parking closures may occur where sidewalk, curb, and ADA improvements are underway.
