HOT SPRINGS, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is announcing and inviting the public to comment on a proposal that will replace four culverts on Montana Highway 28 (MT 28) north of Hot Springs. The two Dry Fork Creek culverts are located about 4 miles north of Hot Springs, and the two Camas B Irrigation Canal Culverts are located about half a mile south of Lonepine.
Proposed work includes replacing the four structurally compromised culverts with new culverts, rebuilding the roadway across the culverts, and upgrading pavement markings. The functioning of these culverts is vital to maintaining water access for local farmers, and for the structural integrity of the roadway to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
Construction is tentatively planned for 2026 depending on completion of design and availability of funds. Temporary construction permits may be required for this project. Relocation of utilities may also be necessary. MDT staff will contact affected landowners prior to survey work. Landowners may be contacted again prior to construction regarding temporary permits.
Partnering with the community is an important part of properly planning for future projects. MDT welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project. Comments may be submitted online at mdt.mt.gov/contact/comment-form.aspx or in writing to Montana Department of Transportation, Missoula office, PO Box 7039, Missoula, MT 59807-7039. Please note that comments are for project UPN 10662000.
The public is encouraged to contact Missoula District Preconstruction Engineer Joel Boucher at 406-544-5802 or Project Design Engineer Josh Dold at 406-444-6385 with questions or comments about the project.
