HELENA, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Montana Materials & Construction are working to improve Interstate 15 (I-15) in Helena. The week of July 7, crews are sweeping and applying interim pavement markings.

Following completion of this work, crews will return in 30 to 45 days to apply the final epoxy paint markings throughout the project area.

“Work remaining this week is minor and won’t require any traffic control,” said Craig Durkin, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “Instead, we ask that motorists use caution, watch out for workers and slow-moving vehicles, and stay off wet paint.”

As part of this project, crews will crack seal the northbound and southbound I-15 bridges over Boulder Avenue between the Capitol Area (Exit 192) and Cedar Street (Exit 193) interchanges. When this work will take place has yet to be determined.

Currently, crews have completed work applying a scrub seal to mainline I-15 between south of the South Helena Interchange (Exit 190) and the Lincoln Road Interchange (Exit 200). Additionally, crews have completed work applying a scrub seal to interchange ramps in the project area.

Travelers are encouraged to visit 511mt.net for the most up-to-date information on current restrictions and road conditions.

The purpose of the I-15 Helena North project is to extend the service life of the roadway, bridges, and interchange ramps. The pavement within this section of I-15 is showing signs of deterioration, and the scrub seal will rejuvenate the existing asphalt and provide a new layer of protection. Construction activities are anticipated to be completed in a single season.
