UPDATE: This closure will remain in place to facilitate the removal and replacement of the concrete surface on the northbound side of the road. The original news release incorrectly indicated this closure would remain in place while the northbound bridge section was removed and rebuilt.
Great Falls, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its construction partner, Ti-Zack Concrete, are preparing for a significant traffic change as part of the 6th Street NW/SW Roadway Resurfacing project. Beginning the week of July 28, crews will begin reconstruction on the roadway between 10th Avenue South and 10th Avenue Southwest.
To complete this work safely and efficiently, 6th Street SW will be temporarily closed to northbound traffic between 10th Avenue South and 10th Avenue Southwest. This closure will remain in place to facilitate the removal and replacement of the concrete surface on the northbound side of the road.
During the northbound closure:
- All northbound traffic will be detoured. Drivers should use 10th Avenue South and connect to Interstate 15 or alternate local routes to travel north across the Sun River.
- Southbound traffic will remain open, and local access will be maintained for residents, businesses, and emergency responders.
Once work in the northbound section is complete, crews will reopen the northbound lanes and temporarily close this same section of road to southbound traffic.
Each direction of closure is expected to last approximately 2 weeks, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting. Crews may work 7 days a week to complete the work on schedule. Drivers should plan for delays and adjust travel plans accordingly.
“We're entering the most complex and impactful phase of this project,” said MDT Great Falls District Administrator Jim Wingerter. “Closing one direction of the bridge at a time allows us to do the necessary reconstruction while still maintaining traffic flow in the opposite direction. We ask drivers to plan ahead and thank the community for their continued patience.”
MDT is committed to ensuring safety and access throughout the project.
