ANACONDA & DEER LODGE, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Montana Lines Inc. are beginning work to upgrade traffic signals at two intersections in Anaconda and one intersection in Deer Lodge the week of August 18. All work is subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

These intersections are located at Park Avenue/Main Street and Commercial Avenue/Main Street in Anaconda, and the intersection of Main Street and Milwaukee Avenue in Deer Lodge. This project will also rehabilitate the pavement on sections of Montana Highway 1 (MT 1) in Anaconda and on Main Street in Deer Lodge.

Construction is anticipated to be substantially completed this fall. Crews will return in 2026 to apply a seal and cover (chip seal) and final pavement markings.

In Deer Lodge, planned improvements for 2025 include upgraded traffic signals, lighting, and curb ramps to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. Additionally, crews will seal cracks on Main Street. In 2026, crews will return to apply a seal and cover (chip seal) to Main Street and restripe the roadway to add a third lane.

In Anaconda, crews will be adding push button crosswalks for pedestrians and enhancing traffic signals and lighting this year. In 2026, crews will return to chip seal the pavement on MT 1 (Commercial Avenue and Park Avenue) between Polk Street and North Cable Road.

This project will address existing ADA concerns with the crossings at the three intersections. Additionally, the rehabilitation of Main Street in Deer Lodge and MT 1 in Anaconda will extend the service life of the pavement. Changes to traffic configuration on Main Street in Deer Lodge will also improve traffic flow in the area.

Once construction begins, pedestrians can expect temporary sidewalk closures and detours at intersections. Motorists can expect flaggers or temporary signals directing traffic, temporary lane closures, reduced speed limits, and delays. All work is expected to take place during daylight hours.
