HELENA, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Montana Materials & Construction will begin applying final epoxy paint markings to Interstate 15 (I-15) in Helena the week of August 18. This work is anticipated to take place Wednesday, August 20 through Saturday, August 23, weather and other factors permitting.

On Thursday, August 21, crews anticipate briefly closing the Capitol Area Interchange (Exit 192) northbound on-ramp and the Custer Avenue Interchange (Exit 194) southbound on-ramp. These closures may last up to a few hours.

“The contractor will temporarily close these ramps to safely paint the merge arrows on these ramps,” said Craig Durkin, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “Crews will work as quickly as possible and plan to reopen ramps the same day. Other ramps, heading in the same directions, will remain open.”

Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes to accommodate closures at this time. While work is taking place, motorists should watch for slow-moving vehicles and wet paint. Additionally, motorists should anticipate reduced speed limits, temporary lane closures, and delays when traveling through the project area.

Travelers are encouraged to visit 511mt.net for the most up-to-date information on current restrictions and road conditions.

The purpose of the I-15 Helena North project is to extend the service life of the roadway, bridges, and interchange ramps within the project area. Construction activities are anticipated to be completed in a single season. Once final epoxy painting is complete, the project team will work to schedule a crack seal of the north and southbound I-15 bridges over Boulder Avenue, which will conclude the project.
