Originally completed in 2017, the Plan provides a comprehensive evaluation of freight transportation within the state. The 2026 update will:
- Communicate how freight supports Montana’s economy.
- Identify significant freight infrastructure and system issues.
- Recommend strategies for improvement.
- Guide freight-related transportation investment decisions.
- Recommend effective freight investment projects.
Montana’s freight network connects Montana’s producers, manufacturers, and businesses to markets across the nation and the world. By engaging with stakeholders, MDT can identify challenges and opportunities to keep goods moving safely, efficiently, and reliably.
While MDT welcomes freight-related comments at any time, the update process presents a focused opportunity for stakeholders to share their perspectives on current and future freight needs.
Schedule
The update process began in July 2025. A draft plan is expected in early fall 2026, followed by a 30-day public comment period. The final Freight Plan is anticipated by January 2027.
