HELENA, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is announcing and inviting the public to comment on a proposal that will upgrade about 1.5 miles of 11th Avenue and Prospect Avenue, in Helena. The project area spans from the intersection with Montana Avenue east, ending near the intersection with Gibbon Street in front of Walmart.
Proposed resurfacing work includes removing and replacing the top layer of asphalt and applying a seal and cover (chip seal), along with upgraded pavement markings and signage.
Pedestrian facility improvements include installing new flashing pedestrian crosswalks signage at the Oakes Street and Washington Street crossings on 11th Avenue. Select wheelchair ramps will also be upgraded throughout the project area.
The purpose of the project is to extend the service life of the roadway and improve accessibility in compliance with current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
Construction is tentatively planned for 2027 or 2028 depending on completion of design and availability of funds. Right-of-way acquisition or temporary construction permits may be required for this project. Relocation of utilities may also be necessary. Landowners may be contacted prior to construction as necessary.
