The National Highway Traffic Safety Association designated October as Pedestrian Safety Month back in 2020. It’s a great reminder that we all share the road, whether we’re walking, biking, or driving. As the days get shorter and it becomes more challenging to see clearly in low light conditions, it's especially important to stay alert and look out for everyone traveling on the roadways.
Drivers, slow down in neighborhoods and school zones, and always watch for people crossing the street — especially at night or in bad weather. Put your phone down and never drive impaired.
Pedestrians, make sure you’re visible. Wear bright or reflective clothing when walking at night, use crosswalks, and stay alert. Try to make eye contact with drivers before crossing and always look left, right, then left again before crossing.
Everyone, no matter your mode of transportation, can make small changes that have a big impact. Teach your children safe walking habits, encourage friends to stay alert, and do your part to stay alert for everyone’s safety!
We all have a part to play in keeping our streets safe. So, this October, let’s commit to safer habits, whether we’re on foot or behind the wheel. A little extra attention goes a long way!
