TAFT, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its design partner, HDR, are designing roadway improvements to nearly 6 miles of Interstate 90 (I-90) in the Lolo National Forest as a continuation of the I-90 Lookout Pass to Taft project. The project begins at the Taft Interchange (Exit 5) and extends east to mile marker 11.1, just east of the Saltese Interchange (Exit 10).
Proposed changes include removing the existing roadway surface and replacing it with concrete, as well as updating drainage, guardrail, and barrier rail. Wildlife crossing facilities are being evaluated, and bridge decks will also be repaired on structures within the project limits.
The proposed improvements are planned to be constructed within the existing roadway width. Minor right-of-way impacts may be necessary, mainly near the Taft Interchange and Saltese Interchange.
The project is currently in the design phase. Construction will likely be split into multiple phases, with the first phase tentatively planned for 2028. This schedule is subject to change depending on available funding and the completion of all project development activities.
Additional information related to project timing, detours, and traffic control will be shared closer to construction.
