ANACONDA & DEER LODGE, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Montana Lines Inc. are pausing work on the Anaconda & Deer Lodge Signal Upgrades project for the winter.
The project was extended beyond the initial single-season timeline due to unforeseen delays in the delivery of replacement signals.
“Because it took so long to receive the replacement signals, we started work on this project later than originally planned,” said Shane Clary, MDT’s Engineering Project Manager for the Butte District. “Due to that, certain work like applying a seal and cover (chip seal) and painting were pushed into next season.”
When crews return in 2026, a chip seal and new pavement markings will be applied to Montana Highway 1 (MT 1) between Polk Street and North Cable Road in Anaconda. In Deer Lodge, Main Street will be chip sealed and restriped to include a new center turn lane between California and Texas Avenue.
This season crews removed and replaced the traffic signal at the intersection of Main Street and Milwaukee Avenue in Deer Lodge with an updated push-button signal for pedestrians. Additionally, ramps were upgraded to current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. Main Street in Deer Lodge was also crack sealed.
In Anaconda, crews removed and replaced the Main Street traffic signals at the intersections of Park Avenue and Commercial Street with updated push-button signals for pedestrians. Additionally, the curb ramps were updated to current ADA standards.
