AUGUSTA, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its partner Battle Ridge Builders, LLC will close a section of Montana Highway 21 (MT 21) from mile markers 0 to 1 beginning March 2 through the end of June 2026, weather and other factors permitting. The closure will allow crews to replace the existing structures at Elk Creek, Elk Creek Overflow, and Hogan Slough.

Construction activities will require full closures at each bridge location, and drivers will not be able to travel through the work zones or cross the bridges while construction is underway. Residents located between the bridge closures, along with Emergency Medical Services (EMS), will be able to access MT 21 from one direction, but not both.

The official detour route will utilize Montana Highway 200 (MT 200) and U.S. Highway 287 (US 287), directing drivers through Bowman’s Corner. Motorists are encouraged to plan additional travel time and follow posted detour signage. Following bridge replacement work, paving and shoulder improvements are expected from late June to early July. Two-way traffic is expected to be maintained during this phase.
