WHITEFISH, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is announcing and inviting the public to comment on a proposal that will resurface about 6 miles of US Highway 93 (US 93), south of Whitefish. The project begins about half a mile north of the City of Kalispell, and extends north, ending at the intersection with Montana Highway 40 (MT 40), just south of Whitefish.

Proposed work includes:

  • Partial depth replacement of the asphalt in the driving lanes.
  • Crack sealing outside the new asphalt replacement areas.
  • Full width seal and cover (chip seal) and fog seal.
  • Full depth replacement of the asphalt and gravel at mile marker 120 in the northbound lanes to address a pavement settlement area.
  • New pavement markings, signage, and delineation, and shoulder rumble strips.

The purpose of the project is to correct the rutting, improve roadway conditions, and to extend the service life of the highway. No traffic operations upgrades (new signals, turn lanes, etc.) will be considered for this project.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2027 depending on completion of design and availability of funds. No new right-of-way or utility relocations will be needed.

Partnering with the community is an important part of properly planning for future projects. MDT welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project. Comments may be submitted online at mdt.mt.gov/contact/comment-form.aspx or in writing to Montana Department of Transportation, Missoula office, PO Box 7039, Missoula, MT 59807-7039. Please note that comments are for project UPN 10570000.

The public is encouraged to contact Missoula District Project Development Engineer Joel Boucher at 406-544-5802 or Project Design Engineer Josh Dold at 406-444-6385 with questions or comments about the project.
