SANDERS COUNTY, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is announcing and inviting the public to comment on a proposal that will resurface about 37 miles on the following road sections in Sanders County:

  • Montana Highway 200 (MT 200). Work will begin at the Montana/Idaho border, and extend east for 10.5 miles, ending near the intersection with Montana Highway 56 (MT 56).
  • MT 56. Work will begin at the intersection with MT 200, and extend north for 16.5 miles, ending about 1 mile south of Bull Lake.
  • Montana Highway 135 (MT 135). Work will begin about 1 mile northwest of the Clark Fork River Bridge (next to the Ferry Landing Picnic Area), and extend east for about 10.5 miles, ending at the intersection with MT 200.

Proposed work includes:

  • Replacing the top layer of existing pavement in the following locations:
    • MT 56 between mile marker 5-7
    • MT 200 between mile marker 3-4
  • Full width, full length crack seal, seal and cover (chip seal) and fog seal.
  • Upgraded pavement markings, rumble strips, and minor bridge work.

The purpose of the project is to prolong and preserve the existing pavement life.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2027 depending on completion of design and availability of funds. No new right-of-way or utility relocations will be needed.

Partnering with the community is an important part of properly planning for future projects. MDT welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project. Comments may be submitted online at mdt.mt.gov/contact/comment-form.aspx or in writing to Montana Department of Transportation, Missoula office, PO Box 7039, Missoula, MT 59807-7039. Please note that comments are for project UPN 10686000.
