HELENA, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is announcing and inviting the public to comment on a proposal that will flatten slopes and install high-tension cable guardrail in the median on about 30 miles of Interstate 15 (I-15), through Helena. The project extends from mile marker 174, starting approximately 2 miles south of Jefferson City at the base of Boulder Hill, to mile marker 204, ending approximately 9 miles north of Helena halfway up the North Hill towards Great Falls.

Proposed work includes grading and installing high-tension median cable guardrail. The purpose of the project is to enhance safety by addressing median related crossover crashes on the interstate.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2030, depending on completion of design and availability of funds. No new right-of-way or utility relocations will be needed.

Partnering with the community is an important part of properly planning for future projects. MDT welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project. Comments may be submitted online at mdt.mt.gov/contact/comment-form.aspx or in writing to Montana Department of Transportation, Great Falls office, PO Box 1359, Great Falls, MT 59403-1359. Please note that comments are for project UPN 9796000.

The public is encouraged to contact Great Falls District Project Development Engineer Jim Combs at 406-454-5900 or Project Engineer David Relph at 406-444-1280 with questions or comments about the project.
