BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Knife River expect to install permanent traffic signals on 7th Avenue North the week of March 30.
The new signals will be installed at the Peach Street/Durston Road and Oak Street intersections. MDT initially planned to install these signals last year as part of the 7th Avenue North Intersections project, but a supply chain shortage delayed this improvement. Signal installation work is expected to take about a week to complete. Once installed, the new signals will allow MDT to adjust the timing to better facilitate the flow of traffic.
“We’re getting close to finishing the improvements on the 7th Avenue intersections,” said Chad Mozol, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “After the signals are installed, the contractor will have to return when temperatures are warmer to apply a seal and cover (chip seal) and the final striping to the road.”
During construction expect reduced speed limits, temporary lane closures, and delays of up to 10 minutes. Pedestrian detours will be in place; please follow signage and cross at marked intersections. Peach Street will be closed between 6th and 7th Avenues from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31. Motorists can detour using 5th Avenue and Tamarack Street during this time.
This summer, crews will return to apply a chip seal and final striping, officially completing the project. This work is only expected to take a few weeks to complete, weather and other factors permitting.
The purpose of this project was to address increasing traffic congestion and wear and tear on this section of roadway. Improvements completed in 2025 included upgrading signals and sidewalks to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, widening Peach Street to provide a dedicated westbound left turn lane, widening Oak Street to restore the shoulder, and milling and paving sections of the road with deep ruts.
