ABSAROKEE, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is announcing and inviting the public to comment on a proposal that will resurface about 17 miles of Montana Highway 78 (MT 78), south of Columbus through Absarokee. The project begins at the intersection with Clough Ave South in Columbus, and extends south, ending near the intersection with Nye Road (Secondary Highway 419).
Proposed work includes milling distressed areas of the existing surface, applying a new overlay, and finishing with a seal and cover (chip seal), and upgraded pavement markings. The purpose of the project is to extend the service life of the existing pavement.
Construction is tentatively planned for 2027 depending on completion of design and availability of funds. No new right-of-way or utility relocation will be needed.
Partnering with the community is an important part of properly planning for future projects. MDT welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project. Comments may be submitted online at mdt.mt.gov/contact/comment-form.aspx or in writing to Montana Department of Transportation, Billings office, PO Box 20437, Billings, MT 59104-0437. Please note that comments are for project UPN 10693000.
The public is encouraged to contact Project Design Engineer Kyle Shuck at 406-670-8630 or Billings District Project Development Engineer Kurtis Schnieber at 406-670-9820 with questions or comments about the project.
