HELENA, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Jeffery Contracting LLC will begin work to rehabilitate approximately 4 miles of Interstate 15 (I-15) the week of April 13, weather and other factors permitting.
The I-15 Sieben North Pavement Preservation project begins near the Sieben Interchange (Exit 216) and extends north approximately 4 miles, ending about 5 miles south of Wolf Creek. This project will significantly rehabilitate both the north and southbound lanes of I-15 over two construction seasons. In 2026, crews will be rehabilitating the northbound lanes of the project area.
Planned improvements include removing and replacing more than a foot of degraded roadway material, adding concrete barrier delineation (high-visibility reflective strips) on inside curves, replacing right-of-way fencing and cattle guards as needed, resurfacing the Spring Creek Interchange (Exit 219) ramps, adding new pavement markings, applying a seal and cover (chip seal), and upgrading concrete barrier rails, metal guardrail, and signage.
Additionally, MDT is rerouting drainage through a new storm drainpipe on the eastern side of Spring Creek Interchange (Exit 219).
“In many ways this project is an extension of the work that happened on the interstate in Wolf Creek over the past several years,” said Matthew Widhalm, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “This project’s northern boundary is exactly where the previous Wolf Creek project ended, and the level of pavement rehabilitation in this project is similar.”
The purpose of this project is to extend the service life of the roadway, improve the ride of the existing pavement, and enhance safety features. The project will also reduce issues that require regular and costly maintenance along this section of interstate.
The project is anticipated to take 2 years to complete, with construction ending in late 2027.
When construction begins, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, both north and southbound traffic will travel on the southbound side of I-15, and speed limits will be reduced.
