LIVINGSTON, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and L&J Construction are beginning work to rehabilitate four bridges in the Livingston area the week of April 13.
Crews will be rehabilitating three bridges on U.S. Highway 89 (US 89) including the bridge that carries US 89 over Interstate 90 (I-90) at Exit 337, the bridge that carries US 89 over I-90 at Exit 340, and the US 89 bridge north of Exit 340 that crosses the Yellowstone River. Additionally, Carter’s Bridge on East River Road south of Livingston will be rehabilitated as part of this project.
Planned improvements include concrete bridge overlays, bridge deck (driving surface) repairs, bridge deck crack sealing, modification or replacement of bridge barrier rail and guardrail, bridge beam and structural repair, and additional erosion control features. Specific repairs or improvements will vary from location to location on this project.
When work begins the bridge over I-90 at Exit 340 will be closed. A detour will be in place for the duration of construction. During this closure all traffic should detour to the next exit on the interstate. I-90 eastbound traffic should travel to Exit 343 to turn around, return to I-90 westbound, and then take Exit 340 to access US 89 north. Additionally, traffic traveling southbound on US 89 seeking to enter eastbound I-90 will need to first enter westbound I-90 and use Exit 337 to turn around and enter eastbound I-90.
“MDT and L&J assessed the situation and determined that a bridge closure is required to get this work done in a timely manner,” said Chad Mozel, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “If we didn’t close the bridge, work would take a lot longer to complete.”
Mozel said that a major goal on all MDT projects is to minimize the impact of construction on the traveling public. For this project, a closure and detour were deemed to be the least inconvenient option.
When work beings, motorists can expect reduced speed limits, temporary signals or flaggers directing traffic, temporary lane closures, and a 10-foot width restriction in place over the bridges. For the most up-to-date information on width restrictions, visit 511mt.net.
The project is anticipated to be completed in a single season.
