BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Knife River are resuming construction on the I-90 Bear Canyon to Jackson Creek project the week of April 13.

This year, crews will finish guardrail installation, apply a seal and cover (chip seal) to the new pavement, and add new paint markings and signage. This work is expected to take approximately 6 weeks to complete.

When work resumes, motorists traveling through the construction zone can expect traffic reduced to a single lane in each direction, flaggers or temporary signals directing traffic on ramps and crossroads, reduced speed limits, and temporary closures of interchange on- and off-ramps within the project area when chip seal is applied to Interstate 90 (I-90) in front of the ramps. Additionally, wide loads may be restricted in the project area at times; please check 511mt.net [511mt.net] for the most up-to-date information on restrictions.

“We have just a few weeks of work needed this year to wrap up construction on this project,” said Chad Mozol, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “The delays should be less significant than last year when paving was taking place. We aim to minimize disruptions and get this project completed as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

Last year, crews removed and replaced the pavement on the east and westbound lanes of I-90; removed and replaced concrete bridge approaches; replaced the median concrete barrier rail, guardrail and rumble strips; removed and replaced the pavement on interstate on- and off-ramps, as well as adjacent crossroads; and installed weather-activated flashing lights at four overpass bridges.

The purpose of this project is to preserve the pavement for many years to come and improve the ride for motorists. It will also provide safety enhancements.
