BELGRADE/BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and partner Riverside Contracting Inc. plan to start construction on the I-90: Belgrade to Bozeman project on Monday, April 13. Crews will begin with improvements to the Interstate 90 (I-90) bridges over Valley Spur Road, which will require single-lane traffic on the bridges for approximately 2 weeks. Members of the traveling public should expect minor delays and are advised to plan for extra travel time.

A 15-foot width restriction will be active while bridge improvements are being completed. Drivers who need assistance finding alternate routes due to the width restriction should call Motor Carrier Services at 406-444-6130.

The purpose of this project is to extend the life of the roadway and enhance safety features along I-90 starting just east of the Belgrade Airway Boulevard Interchange (Exit 299) and ending at the North Rouse Avenue railroad overpass in Bozeman.

Planned improvements include:

  • Resurfacing the roadway by milling the existing surface, applying a new overlay, and finishing with a seal and cover (chip seal)
  • Upgrading pavement markings, signage, and guardrail
  • Constructing minor bridge improvements

Starting on April 19, crews plan to start milling and paving at night to minimize impacts on the traveling public. This work will require single-lane traffic and is expected to be completed between approximately 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., Sundays through Thursdays. Traffic will return to two lanes during the day.

Crews anticipate setting up a detour when they begin milling and paving the I-90 on- and off-ramps to allow the new pavement to properly cure.

Information about traffic control, including detour routes, will be shared on the project website and in email and text updates throughout construction. To request email notifications, contact belgradebozeman@dowl.com. Text I90BZN to 833-648-0322 (toll free) for text/SMS notifications.*

Construction of the I:90: Belgrade to Bozeman project is expected to be completed by late summer or early fall of 2026.

As construction season kicks off, MDT is urging drivers to use caution when traveling through the project area, follow all posted signage, and be aware of workers near the roadway.
