WHITEHALL, Mont.: The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Hoffman’s R&M Services, is beginning the Whitehall Sidewalks project this spring to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility in Whitehall.

This project will add new ADA-compliant sidewalks in key areas of town, helping connect residential neighborhoods to schools, the Community Center, the Recreation Complex, the Jefferson Valley Museum, and Jefferson Fresh Foods.

Work will occur in four locations across Whitehall:

  • Along Yellowstone Trail, on the north side, between the existing pedestrian bridge at Whitetail Deer Creek and Whitetail Drive
  • At the intersection of East 1st Street and North Division Street
  • Along South Division Street, on the east side, from Olive Street to near the Jefferson Valley Museum
  • Along West Legion Avenue, on the north side, from the Jefferson IGA approach to Meadow View Lane

Construction is anticipated to begin in mid to late April and last approximately two months, continuing through spring and early summer.

Construction will take place in multiple areas of town, sometimes simultaneously. Traffic is expected to continue moving normally for most of the project, but travelers should expect reduced speeds, localized lane closures, and flaggers when needed. Temporary sidewalk and parking closures will be in effect, and crews and equipment will be working near the roadway.

Access to homes, businesses, schools, and community facilities will be maintained throughout construction. MDT encourages travelers and pedestrians to use caution in work areas, follow posted signs, and watch for workers and equipment.
