CHURCHILL, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and partner Bullock Contracting, LLC are reconstructing approximately 0.7 miles of Secondary Highway 288 (S 288), also known as Churchill Road. The purpose of the South of Churchill project is to improve roadway alignment and enhance safety features.
In addition to the roadway improvements, a culvert at Yellow Dog Creek will be replaced. This work will require a short-term closure of a small section of S 288 this summer, and will require drivers to use a designated detour route. Additional information regarding the closure and detour will be provided in a future press release.
Planned project improvements include:
- Reconstruction of the roadway
- Horizontal and vertical curve improvements to modify the alignment
- Addition of 4-foot shoulders
- Installation of rumble strips
- Installation of culverts under the roadway to support the new roadway alignment
Construction on this project started in April and is expected to be completed by early fall 2026.
As construction season kicks off, MDT is urging drivers to use caution when traveling through the project area, follow all posted signage, and be aware of workers near the roadway.
