MISSOULA, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Pavement Maintenance Services are beginning construction on the Missoula Urban Pavement Preservation project the week of May 26, following the Memorial Day holiday.
This project will rehabilitate eight streets in the Missoula area, including sections of South 3rd Street, Reserve Street, Toole Avenue, Spruce Street, Madison Street, East Broadway Street, Beckwith Avenue, and Mullan Road. In total, approximately 7 miles of pavement will be repaired.
Each street will receive a crack seal, a seal and cover (chip seal), and new pavement markings.
“For this project we are targeting high-traffic streets around Missoula,” said Dennis Hart, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “The streets being repaired as part of this project will continue to serve the community for many years.”
The purpose of this project is to extend the service life of these roadways. Over time they have become worn down and formed cracks. Repairing these cracks now will prevent them from expanding and requiring more expensive repairs in the future.
When work begins, motorists should expect to encounter flaggers or temporary signals directing traffic, reduced speed limits, and wide load restrictions on a case-by-case basis. Pedestrian traffic at crosswalks will also be disrupted at times and will need to detour. Visit 511mt.net for the most up-to-date information on road conditions and width restrictions.
Additionally, on-street parking will be temporarily disrupted during road work. All vehicles parked on the street will need to be moved prior to construction to avoid towing. This includes disabled vehicles. Construction workers will attempt to notify nearby homes prior to towing.
MDT and Pavement Maintenance Services will work to ensure that businesses in the project area will have at least one access open during construction. However, this may not be viable in all situations, such as businesses with only one access. Driveway access may be temporarily unavailable when fresh chip seal oil is in front of that access.
Work on this project is anticipated to be completed in a single construction season.
