FERGUS AND PHILLIPS COUNTIES, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with M.A. DeAtley Construction, Inc., has resumed Phase 1 construction on the US 191 – Mobridge Slide Repairs project. Construction is expected to continue through June, depending on weather and other unforeseen factors.

Motorists should expect one-lane traffic, flaggers, and possible delays during construction. While traveling through the project site, please be mindful of the speed limit as well as the large trucks and other equipment in the area.

The purpose of this project is to reconstruct and stabilize areas impacted by three landslides on U.S. Highway 191 (US 191) near the James Kipp Recreation Area and the Fred Robinson Bridge over the Missouri River. The project area includes three different locations along the US 191 corridor and is being completed in two phases, with Phase 1 work ongoing.

During the 2025 construction season, crews:

  • Reconstructed embankments to mitigate landslide movements, which involved adding a toe berm and shear key at the base of the landslide
  • Enhanced drainage on Knox Ridge Road
  • Began working on improvements to drainage features
  • Started construction of a new roadway surface

Remaining Phase 1 improvements planned for 2026 include:

  • Completing the drainage features
  • Improving the grading of the roadway
  • Completing construction of the new roadway surface
  • Upgrading safety features such as new guardrail, signage, and pavement markings

Phase 2 of construction is anticipated to begin in 2027, depending on completion of design and availability of funding. This phase will involve work at additional landslide locations on US 191.
