Busy intersection in downtown Butte where a pedestrian waits to cross the road, and cars are driving through

Intersections bring together drivers, pedestrians, and other active transportation users, all sharing the same space on our roads. At intersections a lot of movements happen at once, making them one of the most vulnerable places on the roadway for pedestrians. Montana’s pedestrian-involved crashes (all severities) at intersections or intersection-related areas have increased 50 percent since 2020. As the school year ends and summer travel picks up, Montana communities can expect an increase in foot traffic and visitors. Staying alert, slowing down, and looking out for one another can help prevent crashes and keep everyone moving safely.

Did you know? Unmarked crosswalks are just as important as marked ones. Under Montana law (MCA 61-8-502), drivers must yield the right of way to pedestrians crossing within both marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections.

Many intersection crashes happen because of speeding, distracted driving, or failure to yield. Drivers should slow down as they approach intersections, avoid using phones or other distractions, and look carefully in all directions, including at unmarked crosswalks, before moving through or making a turn. Checking blind spots, using turn signals early, and watching for pedestrians in crosswalks can help drivers react safely and avoid conflicts.  If a car in an adjacent lane stops at a crosswalk (marked or unmarked) you should also stop.  Passing a stopped vehicle is incredibly risky because the driver may be blocking your view of a crossing pedestrian.

Pedestrians also play an important role in intersection safety. Crossing at intersections, obeying traffic signals, staying visible, and avoiding distractions such as phones or headphones can help prevent crashes and improve awareness of surrounding traffic.  Making eye contact with drivers whenever possible can also help improve visibility and communication at intersections.

Safe intersections start with the choices people make every day. Slowing down, staying alert, and remaining patient can help prevent crashes and protect all road users traveling Montana’s roads.
