ESSEX, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Schellinger Construction, will begin roadway improvements on U.S. Highway 2 (US 2) near Essex in June as part of the Stanton – Essex Pavement Preservation project.

The project will improve approximately 12 miles of roadway beginning near Stanton Creek and extending southeast to just beyond the Middle Fork Flathead River bridge. Planned enhancements include milling and replacing asphalt, applying seal and cover (chip seal), installing rumble strips, completing bridge repairs, updating pavement markings, and upgrading guardrail.

Motorists traveling through the project area can expect single-lane closures, reduced speeds, and minor delays during active construction. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, follow posted signage, and remain alert for workers and equipment throughout the corridor.

Construction is anticipated to continue for approximately six months, weather and other factors permitting. Crews are expected to work daytime hours during active construction operations.

Keeping good roads good is a sound financial investment that helps reduce future repair costs and minimizes traffic disruptions over time. Pavement preservation projects are designed to extend the life of the roadway while enhancing safety and improving travel conditions for motorists.
