LIVINGSTON, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and L&J Construction will begin work on Carter’s Bridge over the Yellowstone River on East River Road the week of July 6, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting. Additionally, work on the U.S. Highway 89 (US 89) bridge over the Yellowstone River, north of Interstate 90 (I-90) Exit 340, is planned to begin the week of July 13.
Crews will address various deck surface issues to rehabilitate the bridges and extend their service life. This includes bridge deck crack sealing and installation of embankment protectors that help the structures resist erosion.
“Work on the Carter’s Bridge and the Yellowstone River bridge on US 89 is less extensive than the current work on the Exit 337 and Exit 340 bridges,” said Chad Mozol, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “However, it will still take several weeks to complete the improvements on these structures.”
During construction, motorists should expect single-lane traffic over the bridges controlled by flaggers or temporary signals. A 9-foot width restriction will be in place on Carter’s Bridge, and a 10-foot width restriction will be in place on the US 89 bridge over the Yellowstone River. For the most up-to-date information on width restrictions, visit 511mt.net [511mt.net].
Guardrail work on the I-90 Exit 337 bridge and I-90 Exit 340 bridge ramps east of Livingston will continue the week of July 6. There are temporary ramp closures at Exit 340 during this work. Motorists will need to detour to the next I-90 exit if their interchange ramp is closed.
Crews will pause work and reopen closed ramps by noon on Thursday, July 2. No work will take place July 3 to 5 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. Crews will resume work on Monday, July 6.
This project is anticipated to be completed in a single season.
