GALLATIN GATEWAY, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with engineering design consultant Sanbell, is in the design phase of a project to enhance safety features and improve accessibility at the Mill Street and Rabel Lane with U.S. Highway 191 (US 191)/Gallatin Road intersection in Gallatin Gateway.
As part of the design phase, the project team will host an open house on Tuesday, August 25 to share preliminary project plans and gather community feedback.
“US 191 is an important corridor for Gallatin Gateway and the greater Gallatin Valley, and this intersection serves as a key connection point,” said Geno Liva, MDT Butte District Administrator. “These improvements are focused on enhancing safety at the intersection and making it easier for all travelers to navigate.”
The in-person open house will be held on Tuesday, August 25, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Gallatin Gateway School, 100 Mill Street in Gallatin Gateway. There will be no formal presentation. Community members are welcome to stop by at any time to learn more about the project, ask questions, and share input with the project team.
Planned improvements include installing a new traffic signal at the Mill Street and Rabel Lane with US 191/Gallatin Road intersection, new LED intersection lighting, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant sidewalk ramps at the corners of Rabel Lane and US 191, and widening Mill Street on the west side of the intersection to add a left-turn lane.
“Improving visibility, traffic operations, and accessibility at this intersection will help address current safety needs while accommodating future traffic,” said Jeremy Herring, Senior Project Engineer at Sanbell. “Community feedback during the design phase is an important part of the process and will help ensure the final design reflects local needs.”
A construction date for the project has not yet been scheduled.
The project is funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), which identifies locations where higher-severity crashes have occurred and prioritizes projects that reduce serious injuries and fatalities.
