HELENA, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Hoffman’s R&M Services LLC will be closing Lincoln Road east of the Applegate Drive intersection from August 19 to 21, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting. The closure will take place from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day.
A detour route using Montana Avenue, Sierra Road, and Green Meadow Drive will be in place during the closure and marked with signage. This closure will allow crews to remove and replace a bridge on Lincoln Road just east of the Applegate Drive intersection.
“Closing the road is the only viable option for replacing this bridge,” said Craig Durkin, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “We will be sticking closely to the schedule, so if you need to travel through the project area during these hours you will need to use the posted detour route or another alternative.”
Removal and replacement of this structure is anticipated to be completed prior to Saturday, August 22. The structure no longer serves its original purpose and is being removed to enhance safety and increase the lifespan of this section of Lincoln Road.
The purpose of the Lincoln – Applegate Intersection project is to enhance safety features and improve traffic operations. Between 2005 and 2015, a total of 39 crashes occurred at this location. This resulted in one fatality and three incapacitating injuries. The crash history in addition to rapid growth in Helena’s north Valley contributed to the need for the project.
Work on this project began this spring and is anticipated to be completed in a single construction season.
