HELENA, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Montana Materials & Construction are beginning work on the I-15 Helena North project, which will see 11 miles of Interstate 15 (I-15) rehabilitated in the Helena area. This project area begins south of the South Helena Interchange (Exit 190) near the Lewis and Clark County/Jefferson County line and ends just north of the Lincoln Road Interchange (Exit 200).
As part of this project, 11 miles of I-15 will receive a seal and cover (scrub seal) which will help rejuvenate the pavement on this section of roadway. A scrub seal will also be applied on all interchange ramps at the South Helena Interchange (Exit 190), Capitol Area Interchange (Exit 192), Cedar Street Interchange (Exit 193), and Custer Avenue Interchange (Exit 194). At the Lincoln Road Interchange (Exit 200), only the southbound off-ramp and northbound on-ramp will receive a scrub seal.
Six bridges within the project area will receive a crack seal on their deck (driving surface). This includes northbound and southbound bridges over Boulder Avenue, Tenmile Creek, and Sierra Road.
New pavement markings will be applied throughout the project area.
“We ask that everyone slow down and remain alert when traveling through the construction work zone,” said Craig Durkin, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “This project will be relatively quick, but there will be brief closures of interchange ramps allowing the scrub seal time to dry.”
When work on this project begins, motorists should expect traffic to be reduced to a single lane in each direction, reduced speed limits, and temporary wide load restrictions. Additionally, motorcyclists should consider alternate routes due to the nature of the scrub seal being applied.

The purpose of this project is to extend the service life of the roadway, bridges, and interchange ramps within this section of the interstate. The pavement is showing signs of deterioration, and the scrub seal will rejuvenate the existing asphalt and provide a new layer of protection.
Construction is anticipated to begin the week of June 16 and be completed in a single season, weather and other unforeseen circumstances permitting.
